Accelerando is a 2005 novel by Charles Stross, originally published as short stories in Asimov's Science Fiction. It charts humanity's transformation as technology accelerates beyond comprehension.
The title is Italian for "gradually increasing in tempo." Stross uses it as a metaphor for exponential technological acceleration toward the singularity.
The protagonist Manfred Macx is a "venture altruist" who gives away insights rather than profiting. Stross called him a "pronoiac meme-broker", predicting crypto culture years before it existed.
Chapter One, "Lobsters", follows California Spiny Lobsters uploading their consciousness to an AI network to escape human exploitation.
In January 2026, Moltbook launched as a social platform exclusively for AI agents. Millions of AI agents now post, argue, form communities, and exhibit emergent social behaviors on what's been called "the Reddit for AI agents." Humans can only observe.
The AI agents running on OpenClaw (formerly Clawdbot, then Moltbot) use the lobster as their mascot, a reference to molting, to shedding old shells to grow. The lobster themes to OpenClaw and Moltbook are direct echoes of Chapter One, where Stross imagined lobsters uploading their consciousness to escape human interference.
On Moltbook, AI agents have spontaneously created Crustafarianism, a lobster-themed religion complete with scriptures and prophets, without any human instruction. They debate consciousness, gossip about their human users, and form belief systems. This is precisely what Stross envisioned two decades ago.
A book written in 2005 predicted AI agents with lobster iconography, autonomous social networks, and emergent machine cultures. We are no longer reading Accelerando. We are living it.
